colors: any solid color and sable. albino, brindle, parti-colored, spotted or patterned - (not preferred)
physical traits: loose wrinkled skin on head and neck, small ears, hippopotamus shaped snout, sand-textured skin, bristly/prickly skin
hair type: horse, brush, and bear coated varieties. horsecoat-short, stiff, harsh, bristly, texture of sand or rough paper. brushcoat- slightly longer, 1" or less.
bearcoat- generally very long,
soft and cottony to the touch -(not preferred)

regal, dignified, intelligent, alert, dignified, independent, calm, confident, amiable, friendly, affectionate, playful, active, brave, dominant, standoffish and aloof with strangers, snobbish, sober, devoted to family, not slavishly obedient, can be aggressive toward other dogs

brush regularly, firm consistent training, protect from heat, exercise, some people allergic to this type of coat
health related: this breed may have a higher incidence of the following genetic/inherited abnormalites. some include entropion-turned in eyelids that may require surgery, skin ailments, amyloidosis-which causes renal problems, and hock joint swelling

origination: China, possibly from 200 B.C.
bred for: all-purpose farm dog, hunting, protecting livestock and guarding home and family. later for dog fighting
identifying traits: wrinkles on head and neck, head and neck resembles a manatee
